Factors to Consider When Buying Dome Tents

Recently, dome tents have gained popularity as an option for camping tents as you can get them in many different sizes.  However, is this type of tent really the right choice for you?  Let’s take a look at the different types of dome tents, and consider its advantages and disadvantages of this camping tent design.

There are two dome tent styles, the classic geodesic dome and the half dome or tunnel tent.  The classic design has a simple dome shape.  If you are considering a bigger tent, there are also larger family tents available that are made up out of several domes.  Both styles are great for family camping, which involves spending the whole time at one place, since they are larger and offer more space.

For backpackers, the half dome or tunnel tents are a better option.  Since the dome is reduced in size, weight is cut down producing a smaller pack size, making it more convenient to carry.

The advantages of dome tents as compared to other types are:

1.  Dome tents have larger floor space, which can give you more sleeping area as well as sufficient space for your camping bags and gear.

2.  In extreme weather, dome tents are also highly sturdy. The poles are made of flexible materials like carbon fiber as compared to other tent types that use static frames.  It achieves its stability when all tent components are working together.  The low, round shape of dome style tents allows rain and snow to be shed easily, making the tents very wind resistant as well.

3. The absence of heavy tent frames makes it lighter than cabin tents of the same size.

4.  Dome tents are easy to set up as they often use shock-corded poles.  These poles easily unfold to full length, and easy to use since its color coding system shows you where each pole must go.

5. Most family dome tents are free-standing, and can be set up on any level surface.  However, the rain fly does need staking.  In addition, it is often advised that you do stake your tent down, just in case strong winds come up.

However, there are also disadvantages which you need to consider such as:

1. There is less usable space for camping furniture than equally sized cabin tents.  Large items can only be set up in the center part.

2. Due to the dome shape, head space is often a problem, so there is less freedom to move.  In the smaller sized dome tents, you can only sit up, and you have to crawl instead of walk while the half dome or tunnel tents might not even allow a tall person to sit up straight.  At least with larger dome tents, you can stand fairly straight in the center, unless you are very tall.

These factors clearly show you if dome style tents are for you.  Consider your options well as a good tent is a basic requirement to enjoy your camping trip.

Classic domes are an excellent choice for camping vacations that are likely to encounter extreme weather conditions, especially strong wind, but will find you most of your time outside.  It is also for people who can do with less space and comfort.

While for backpacking or other types of travel-camping, the half dome or tunnel tents are great options.  However, if you are traveling with half your household, or expect to spend much time inside the tent, consider getting a cabin tent instead.
