The Family Tent And How To Keep It In Good Condition

You’ve bought your family tent at a relatively high price.  You want to make sure that it stays in excellent condition until the next time you use it, hopefully lasting you more than just a few camp outings.  Here are a few tips on how to keep your family tent in tip-top condition while you are using it.

  1. Try not to pitch your family tent under big trees, so as to avoid all kinds of debris that could fall onto it, which could rip, stain or damage it.
  2. Make use the natural breaks in the wind flow such as hedges and bushes by positioning the family tent near these areas.  Try to situate the tent away from wind movements coming in.
  3. Pitch your family tent always with zips closed—this will make it easier for you and there is less possibility of debris going in while you’re pitching it.
  4. Be gentle with your tent!  Once you notice that you are exerting too much pressure during pitching, then there is something wrong with what you’re doing.
  5. Make sure your pegs are at an angle in the same direction as the seam.  This is the best set-up for a family tent, or any tent, for that matter.  Cross over pegs positioned at the base of your zips, to minimize straining of ropes and pegs.
  6. Stay away from other tents, making sure you are at least 18 feet from them.  Each family will most likely want to have their own living area outside their tents, so allow for some movement in and out of the family tent. Try to make space for other possible stuff like a barbecue stand or bicycles.  Always remember that if you yourself would want some privacy while camping, other people will most likely feel the same way, so be considerate about personal space.
  7. Try not to place your cooking equipment right beside the sides of the family tent as this will increase the chances of the tent catching fire.  This is a very dangerous setup.  Keep all exit points clear for contingencies like this.

The above steps show that just by pitching your family tent in the proper way and in the proper location, you are actually helping in the maintenance of your tent.  Making sure that the tent is safe from hazards like debris and fire may seem like such a simple step, but with it, you are ensuring that this family tent will see through a lot of family fun and memories in your lifetime.
