Sleeping bags have been around for awhile. In the late 19th century, The Euklisia Rug, pioneered by Pryce Pryce-Jones was released to the public. Pryce Pryce-Jones is believed by many as one of the firsts to introduce the modern sleeping bag.
What is a sleeping bag? A sleeping bag is kind of ‘bag’ that a person uses to sleep in. It is basically a blanket that can be closed up with the use of a zipper. Sleeping bags can be used in situations where bringing your own bed is impractical such as when you are camping and hiking. Not only does it serve as a place to sleep in, it functions to keep a person warm. The sleeping bag shields the person using it from wind and even precipitation.
Sleeping bags come in many forms. Standard ones are the most common as they are the cheapest yet functional. Basic sleeping bags are square blankets with zippers on it. This kind is usually packed through folding or rolling up. They may be functional for regular camping sites that have moderate temperatures but they are not advisable to use when you are camping in locations with extreme temperatures.
Another common and popular type of sleeping bags is sometimes referred to as ‘mummy bags’ because its shape resembles that of a mummy. This kind of sleeping bags differs from basic sleeping bags in ways that are proven to be beneficial to its users.
Designed in such a way that it tapers from the head part down to the foot end, the mummy bag retains more heat because of the reduced surface area and volume. This design feature provides more protection for the feet which is one of the most susceptible to heat loss.
There are even bags that are designed after the shape of a woman’s body. One noted disadvantage of mummy bags is that unzipping is limited to the upper body. They do not unzip right towards the feet.
Mummy bags have what you call a drawstring at the head part that is paired with a cord lock. This feature stops warm air from escaping. Unlike the basic sleeping bags that are usually rolled and put away, mummy bags are placed into its stuff sack.
The third kind of sleeping bag is designed to have arms and legs. This kind of sleeping bag accommodates movement and flexibility when you are sleeping. This sleeping bag is often used for overnights at the tents, boats, campers, or even cars.
Sleeping bags are necessities when camping out or hiking. Make sure to research the best ones for you when you are planning to get one for overnight camping trips. Having the best sleeping bag will help you sleep comfortably so you can recharge and be ready for the next day at camp!
